Alright this is an update on Project S4.  I didn’t want it to be a ‘project’ but as I informed you on the Eventuri review…I can’t leave well enough alone.  So here we go!

The B9 generation S4 ditches the blown V6 offered in the last generation and instead uses an entirely new turbocharged V6 with a ‘Hot Vee’ configuration.  What does that mean?  It means the turbo resides in the actual valley in between the cylinder banks.  That gives you minimal lag, better throttle response and simpler packaging.  The disadvantage is heat…a lot of it.

Now there are two ways you can fix that.  One is on the OE side of the house.  An air-to-water intercooler cools down the charged air with coolant giving you lower intake temps, better efficiency and better heat dissipation.  The bad part of that is the additional cost and complexity it adds.

The second option is a simple air-to-air intercooler.  Which is the route Audi went and it works okay if you decide to keep the vehicle stock and don’t drive it hard.  Unfortunately Audi stuck the B9 S4 with an intercooler off the A4 which means it’s too small to do any good.  So even if you don’t have a lead foot…summer time in Georgia will heat soak that thing immediately.

So, as always, the aftermarket is here to help.  Since an air to water setup is not possible…getting a larger air-to-air is the way to go.  My first attempt was to do it myself and while it was a rather easy install the intercooler I bought was damaged.

Since I already got sweaty and dirty once and chalk it up to ‘been there…done that’  I went to the fine folks over at Autohaus Social in Atlanta for the assist.  Before we quickly talk about the AWE, let me go into some detail about Autohaus Social.

The owner is Nash Tehrani and if you were blessed to be in the ATL car scene in the 2000s you know that name.  The bright and energetic Nash has been a cornerstone of the ‘Dub’ scene for decades.  His dream was to open a shop that wasn’t just your standard oiled soaked rag.  He wanted to create an environment that is fun, open and well social.  A place where you sit down, relax and talk to your fellow enthusiasts instead of being cramped in low lit waiting room with bad coffee.  With that in mind Autohaus Social was born.  Now in its second year of operation it’s been a boon to the Atlanta market and I for one cannot be happier.

Now let’s talk about this gigantic intercooler!  Gigantic is the operative word here folks.  It offers a massive 180% increase over the stock unit.  So, in other words, HEAT SOAK no mo!  The bar and plate construction along with the sheer size makes it a quality unit.  Since Nash and crew did the install…it was literally no sweat off my back as well.

So we have air going in (Eventuri), air being cooled (AWE)…how about some extra squish, bang and blow?

….Stay tuned
